So I get this request for a donation in the mail from SmileTrain and I am just a little taken aback by it. Now first you have to understand that this is actually is a decent charity with admirable goals. However, if you do some research (see Charity Watch or Great Non Profits ) you will quickly see that while SmileTrain has good ideals, they have some screwy accounting practices and the management is surprisingly well compensated for a non-profit. At any rate I found this envelope to be a tad distasteful, not because of the child but because of the implication that if you don’t send us money we just keep bugging you till you do.
